20 Minute Loop

20 Minute Loop was/is a San Francisco-based band notable for its self-proclaimed “freak-pop” sound, hook-heavy melodies and complex vocal harmonies. 20ML was heavily active in the Bay Area scene from 1996 – 2009, and in 2015 began playing “Unplugged” shows and recording a new album, which Kelly co-produced.

In early 2017, 20ML released "Songs Praising the Mutant Race", their sixth studio album and their first pressed to vinyl. In re-imagining, re-arranging, ironing out, and stitching this material back together, the band wanted the songs to shine without being burdened by too much production. The songs and singers are laid bare, accompanied by overdubs from mostly acoustic instruments, including viola, trumpet, flute, accordion, wineglass organ, guitar and piano. The result is a perfect depiction of the vibe from one of the living room concerts that inspired the record, with the band’s visceral lyrics and accompanying tempos taking on a woozy, syrupy overtone that makes these songs feel fresh. Sonically, these new versions focus on the vocal interplay between Giles and Atkins, who sound more like they were born to sing together than ever before.
